If Mother Earth and a specific Japanese kaiju monster (the one copyright won’t allow us to name, but you know it) had a child, the result would be VEGAMAMA. Aiming her laser pointer eyes in the direction of us wayward humans, she’s here to make sure we’re all eating our greens (off the new Wagamama 50% vegan menu). Applying his personal brand of premium weird to Uncommon’s creative, director Vedran Rupic has brought to life a giant, tempestuous herbivore - accompanied by her own theme music, played on a broken recorder. To appease her, best we get ordering bucketloads of those sticky vegan bbq ribs - "okay"?
Vedran Rupic is a director living in Sweden. Originally from Bosnia, he came to Sweden as a refugee. He started doing films in high school when he gave up on his dreams of becoming a scientist. Documentaries at first, but much like science, you can't make stuff up, so he started doing shorter narrative work. “I like stories that twist and turn unexpectedly and the occasional elegant breaking of the fourth wall. I think one should be able to joke about everything. Imagine someone slipping on a banana peel. Super fun. But then again I'm certain there is this sad story somewhere out there about a single income household provider slipping on a banana peel and breaking their neck. It's devastating. So for this reason, one should not be able to joke about slipping on banana peels? Well no, someone is always gonna get hurt. We just have to try to not be a dick about it. And it has to be funny”. Amongst other things, his video for Salvatore Ganacci ‘Horse’ caught our eye for its sheer absurdist perfection. Vedran does weird at its best, in his own words, he does ‘premium weird’.
