‘Win as One’ was shot entirely during lockdown in London, Berlin, Los Angeles, New York and South Korea. To overcome the hurdles of travel bans and social distancing, production company Park Pictures and VFX studio Black Kite teamed up to design a unique self-capture shooting work flow from very early stages of the pre-production process. Footage was to be shot exclusively on the iPhone 11 Pro, which was loaded with specialized hardware and software (developed and tested by Black Kite) and shipped to carefully casted football ‘crews’ around the world. Filming took place within the crews’ own self-isolation set ups, with Terence Neale directing the action remotely from South Africa alongside Paris-based DOP, Kaname Onoyama. The resulting 60-second spot is much more than a simple ‘lockdown project’. It encapsulates the strength of the global creative community in spite of our current circumstances, and shows how we can create work that lives beyond what we’re living through right now.
Terence Neale is a Cape Town based director who has established himself as a distinctive voice in commercial and music video direction. Terence first garnered international attention in 2012 through a creative collaboration with Zef rap-rave duo Die Antwoord. In 2017 he became the first ever South African director to win a Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions for the adidas commercial ‘Original Is Never Finished’. Terence has since worked with a number of high-profile international brands and continues to push boundaries through his strong performance direction and brilliantly unconventional perspectives.
