Special Skills follows a typical job interview that takes an absurd turn when the manager inquires further regarding the applicant's additional noteworthy expertise. I was in pre-production for 6 months on a short film, and by chance stumbled upon this office that was in the basement of the location I settled on. I thought of this concept the day before the shoot, managed to sort casting last minute, filmed everything in 2 hours by leaving the space entirely untouched, and then went upstairs to film my longer short for the rest of the day. Sometimes the concepts I come up with that I don’t overthink end up landing more.
Taso Alexander is a Greek-Canadian writer and director. He began his career acting in commercials before moving into film and TV casting. As a result, he's been known to have a keen eye or "knack" for talent direction. His dry comedic sensibilities could be further defined as "absurdity played straight" - managing to consistently deliver on the unexpected. His debut short film 'The Spadina House' premiered at TIFF and won several awards along the way - including gold in Film Craft at the ADCC's.
