Loved Into Being

After living in New York City for 9 years I've longed to tell stories about the people and place where I'm from. I'm a 4th generation Mexican-American from San Antonio, TX, and the decades my family and so many others have spent in this country have created an incredibly nuanced culture. It's vibrant. It's full of love. It's a beautiful fusion with details that often get overlooked in advertising and entertainment, even though this culture is represented by so many people. I recalled a captivating scene in the film, "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood", where the character of Fred Rogers asks the person across from him to take a minute to remember the people who have loved him into being. I believe the idea originated from Mr. Rogers' lifetime achievement award acceptance speech where he asked the audience to do the same thing. This struck me deeply, especially as someone who grew up watching Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Made with a cast of mostly non-actors and even real family members, this film is simply my own 60 second meditation on those who have "Loved me into being". It is just the first tiny step forward in celebrating and championing these people and culture that I love so dearly.
