Shot on 35mm in the early morning light of British Columbia, "The Leaves" was a real lesson in scrappiness. Working with a very limited budget we only were able to purchase a single 400ft roll of film allowing us for basically one single take. Our DOP, Cole Graham, found an extra 400ft roll that had been in his freezer for 8 years so our backup was a risk in itself. We kept the team small to allow for agility and control since we were shooting at an exact minute in the morning for that perfect sunrise light. In the end, with our rehearsals out of the way, we were able to get two shots out and wrap the quickest shoot I've ever been a part of. The simplicity shines in this piece and allows for the video to lure you along in that same hair-raising way that the song does. "The Leaves" is made up of a million little things all working together - the bag, the leaves, the cigarettes, the billboard - and to me, that's the beauty of it.
