The Houdini project, like stated in its name, was a bit magical, based on visual illusions put in post production. While watching this, you’ll find yourself wondering how everyone suddenly appears, synced to the enchanting rhythm of Dua Lipa. Well, it wasn’t the only magic thing: we prepped this in 2 weeks, shot this in 2 days, and edited it in one night, with 2 days of SFX. What made it possible was the instant crazy energy happening both on set and during the practice session. The dance was rehearsed beforehand with professional dancers, so that the camera and movements where perfectly on point. We wanted this video to be more simple, to develop her image as a stronger, more accessible woman. If it rings a bell, it’s because it’s a reference to madonna’s hit, « hung up » where dancing alone in her studio, she feels both sensual and powerful; and then is suddenly surrounded by an army of dancers. In Houdini, the dancers move around in a similar way, in adoration with Dua. Like a magician, she attracts everyone around her by being unapologetically herself. It’s as if the characters where melted together, reminiscing us of Gondry’s video « Got to keep on » by The Chemical Brothers. Regarding the camera movements, the idea was to make us feel close to her with hand held camera and fast movements. There is also a very sharp division in the aesthetic of the film: her red hair (warm tones) against cool hard tones. Reminiscing us of the after hours short film by Anton Tammi, this music video also tackles the theme of pain and loneliness in stardom. But more than the magic tricks, the idea was to showcase the history of a woman whose dreams lead her to engage with others.
