Sometimes a sandwich can explain everything. In this case, Awkwafina explains to the one and only Danny DeVito about the world of Discord - but the sandwich is along for the ride. When Discord asked its community to explain what the digital platform meant to them, one answer stood out: sandwich. Enter Riff Raff’s Finn Keenan as director of “Discord – The Movie (2021)” through Amsterdam-based agency AKQA. And they brought along GRIMES, JBALVIN, MRBEAST, MARQUES BROWNLEE and BRETMAN ROCK for good measure. The hero film in Discord’s ‘Imagine A Place’ campaign is designed to introduce and promote engagement with the platform - like anything else understanding comes with familiarity. So, if at the end of this five-minute, quite simply epic, spot you only understand Danny DeVito’s love of eggs, you’re probably not alone. But at least you got to see a flying cow and a bunch of sock puppets eating pizza. Finn Keenan, Director said: It has been amazing to work with both such a creative brand and agency who really let me go proper silly with this. Developing the script with Alex Rose and Noé Sato from AKQA was such a fun and collaborative process. We would speak to Discord users and let those conversations influence the different scenes. I was really blown away by how much Discord means to people, and what’s lovely is that the film seems to be going down very well with the Discord community. This project took a lot of incredible people to put in a lot of incredible work. From the crew to the wonderful cast, and of course Riff Raff and our amazing producer Matt Clyde. The amount of enthusiasm surrounding this film from the start has been brilliant. This film really wouldn't have been possible without people willing to go that extra mile, and for that, I can’t thank everyone enough!
Finn Keenan is an Irish filmmaker from Cavan. After spending most of his teens obsessively trying to emulate tricks from music videos that he watched growing up and making short films with his friends, Finn went on to study Film at the National Film School Ireland. After graduating, he found his feet shooting, directing and editing videos for Irish bands such as The Strypes, Raglans and Otherkin; before moving to London and has since worked with The Wombats, The Kooks, Louis Berry, George Ezra and Willie J Healy. After joining Riff Raff's Nursery of Evil in 2017, Finn worked on the Nike ‘LDNR’ and Nike ‘Never Ask’ campaigns with Wieden+Kennedy, directing the social films for both as well as the socials for Halifax ʻThat New Home Feelingʼ with Adam & Eve. He graduated to the main director roster when his gravity defying music video for MK's ʻBack and Forthʼ won three Gold awards at the 2019 Kinsale Sharks. At the end of the same year he directed ‘Qiang Diao’ for Nike China through W+K Shanghai, which was deemed Shots Ad of the Week for its “absurdist, spectacular and unique” nature and went on to be included in the APA’s Top 20 of 2020. Since then he has made ‘Feel Next Level’ for FIFA21 through Adam&EveDDB and provided more on-screen comedy with ‘We Got It’ for Just Eat through McCann.
