Negative Space is a song equal parts tender and lonely. In crafting this video, I wanted to try to use subtle cinematic techniques to achieve a similar emotional balance. By shooting on 16mm film and by changing the motivation of the song: first it plays nondiegetically over the story world, then, at a key moment in the story, the song shifts and rings out inside the story world. This small slice of life film explores the emptiness of the passenger seat next to you after saying goodbye to someone you love. We wanted to blur the lines between a music video and a short film by providing the audience with enough of a narrative to make them feel strongly, while also providing visuals that supplemented and amplified the beauty already inherent in the song.
