Each choreographer's work is showcased in its own short film, giving individual artists and dancers the opportunity to approach their films with a unique sense of purpose and storytelling. All five dance films were shot on location at Art Cake over the course of two days. With such a tight schedule, we worked with each dancer separately before filming to understand their vision and map out a concise production plan. As a director of many dance films, I believe in embracing a more in-the-moment, live performance-esque style of filmmaking. Although we always walk in with a plan and a well-developed vision, we must also be open to capturing great unscripted moments. Behind the scenes, it was very much a duet between the dancer and our camera team, even though it may have looked like solo dances were being performed. We were given full creative freedom by Art Cake Executive Director Marina Gluckman, and the collaborative spirit of the whole experience was like a dream.
Award-winning, New York City based Director Corydon “Cordy” Wagner is known around town as the resident digital humanist with a tech-happy streak.
