The project was produced as part of the NFTS's Directing Commercials course. It was a real commercial, not a spec. What was unique in this one was that we were given a loose brief, no organizing idea, no concept and we were asked to come up with everything from the story and the script, down to the strap-line. All talent used in the film we neuro-diverse or had a background which would put them outside of what the mainstream beauty media would call "perfect". I've struggled with negative self-image and feeling not beautiful, not ever good enough and to me telling a story about a cosmetics brand that believed that what is natural about you is what makes you beautiful, really resonated with me to my core.
Andy is a mixed-heritage director of commercials, short films, music videos and branded content. His style began taking shape early with roots in theatre, literature, Classical art and later branched out into the innovative world of advertising. His experience as both a writer and an art director is an integral part of his style as a director, which blends precise visual aesthetics with concept, language and emotion to craft powerful stories. Melancholy underpinned by hope, disillusionment yearning for wonder, nostalgia and a fierce expression of identity are all key themes in Andy's work. As a filmmaker, he is especially drawn to projects that empower women, explore culture and identity, and those which enable him to weave weirdly wonderful narratives with innovative, modern filmmaking techniques. What's more, he's is also an accomplished martial artist, fencer, and an equestrian. He is perfectly capable of leading a Medieval-style conquest but luckily all he seems to want to do is make films.
