We don't choose the life we're given. But circumstances don't define who you are, your choices do. As an 11 year old Assana had to move from his home country to Germany, not speaking a single word of german. Instead of support from his new classmates, he was confronted with discrimination. It is easy to watch our problem with racism from a distance. But what if you are the target of it? Watch the film to see the injustice in our society out of Assana's perspective.
I discovered my passion for filmmaking on my skateboard when I started as a teenager (born in 1993) in Hamburg to see the world through a viewfinder with my camcorder and self-made cage. After graduating from high school and a year abroad in America, I worked on set at Studio Hamburg and Markenfilm. This led to my apprenticeship as a media designer with a focus on color grading at INFECTED Postproduction, which I completed in January 2018. After working intensively on international commercials, I was drawn from the grading Suite back behind the camera. In 2018 I won the Hamburg Young Talent Award with the film “Falsehood”. This was followed by a master’s degree in cinematography at the Hamburg Media School, where I was taught by renowned lecturers, e.g. Judith Kaufmann, Matthias Bolliger and Christopher Aoun. In 2020 the degree of Master of Arts (Cinematography) followed. Since then I have been working as a director, DOP and colorist for feature films and advertising.
