Shot using a number of formats to showcase the passing of time, Snowfalls in the Summer spans across four decades, observed through the lens of a single room in the family home. For many, the family home is an integral part of the family unit, hosting birthdays, funeral wakes, witnessing fights and tears of joy in equal measure. The more I thought, the more I was amazed at how such a small building could take on an almost metaphysical presence in a families memories. I made Snowfalls in the Summer to explore this trinity of people, places, and memories, so interwoven with each other that you can often feel the physical weight. Snowfalls in the Summer lifts the lid on the personal struggles fought by those who may not be living on the bread line but are forced to continuously dig deep to survive
Ajuan has directed short films that have played at Oscar and BAFTA qualifying festivals. His most recent short, Snowfalls in the Summer, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival. With a background in documentaries, he also has credits for Netflix, National Geographic and the BAFTA nominated BBC documentary We are Black and British. Ajuán’s filmmaking often explores our relationship with memory and family through the expression of the harsh reality and beautiful nature of life, the struggles and the simple rituals that make us human. For Ajuan, it always starts with the characters. Who are they? Where does their humanity lie? What can they tell us about ourselves? His filmmaking often starts from a personal place before expanding into something else.
