Director's Works

Subaru, Firsts Jon Chiang
Jon has always been drawn to universal stories woven from underrepresented people. Raised by Chinese parents born in Lima, Peru, he grew up in his family’s grocery store in East Vancouver. Walking the blurred lines of his Chinese and Latino heritage, he developed a sensitivity that he uses to reveal the truths about our shared experiences. A commercial director and filmmaker, he's currently represented by Sequoia in Canada. His work's been acknowledge by the 1.4 Awards, Berlin Commercial Awards, NOWNESS, Shots.net, Filmshortage, Music Bed Awards, the Whistler Film Festival, Asian American Film Festival and BOOOOOOOM among many others.
September always reminds me of the first time I left home. I filled my tiny Subaru to the brim and drove 30 minutes away from home. I laugh now because it wasn’t actually that far. But it felt big. There was a mix of sadness and excitement. It occurred to me that cars become literal vehicles for our lives. The idea of a car piece that centres around a relationship has been floating in my head for quite some time now. A camera truck. Dusty Roads. The tiniest of home rentals. And our amazing talent and crew. Firsts, Inspired by my first Subaru. Hope you enjoy.
