I used to always tease my Nan by asking if I was her favourite, I’d try and trick her into saying it. Even though she’d deny there was always a twinkle in her eye, a purse of the lips. Truthfully it didn’t matter if I was her favourite because she was mine. As my first foray into narrative filmmaking there was no question in my mind who’s story it should be. My Nan’s life was almost unbelievable - living through the Holocaust, Hungarian Revolution, escaping across the border and coming as a refugee to a very foreign land, Australia. Horror, hatred, and hardship. A life so different to mine but despite all of this she was determined to leave the past and most of her culture behind to become a true blue Aussie. Gobble Gobble gives a unique perspective of Australian identity from a generation starting to be lost but more universally than that it is a love story between grandmother and granddaughter. It is a story about self-acceptance and at its core a film for someone who didn’t think they deserved their story to be told. This is my love letter to Vera.
